Story Line: If this is to be Yen’s last outing as Ip Man, it is a poignant and fitting end. The plot is rather scattered, as a corrupt American developer wants to buy the land where impoverished children go to school. Master Ip Man must take the fight to injustice, with some electrifying fight scenes, and incredible cinematography and fight choreography. What is even more important, a subplot ends up making the film more than just a brawl fest, it adds genuine emotion and tenderness. Besides the wild and spectacular fights and stunt work, the acting and chemistry make for a more humanizing protagonist, rather than just a fighting machine. Ip Man 3 is not perfect, but very well crafted and enjoyable. Now comes the third installment and for whatever reason, they decided to throw in an appearance by Iron Mike Tyson. I loved Tyson as a boxer (early on), but he doesn’t do anything good for himself as an actor. This film might’ve been better IF they’d used someone else ANYONE else. What does save the film is the climactic scene and his confrontation with a Muay Thai fighter. Both scenes we’re very good. Another save the film had for itself was its attempt to display more sensitivity to his relationship with his first wife. I haven’t seen too many martial arts films that successful show a sensitive side to its master....
